IMPT is pleased to announce that
it has successfully raised further funds as part of the matched funding for its EU backed
Thin-Si project.
The vision of the 11-company consortium behind ThinSi (or “thin
silicon”) is the development of crystalline silicon thin-film solar
cells as part of a high throughput, cost-effective manufacturing process
that aims to reduce substantially the consumption of high-purity
silicon material, but at the same time maintain high efficiencies
comparable to wafer silicon solar cells.
IMPT is also seeking to progress a second EU backed "
nano-PV" (nano-photovoltaic) project
as part of a second EU consortium. More news on this should hopefully
be available in the final quarter of 2010.
Both EU backed projects are aimed at reducing the cost of manufacturing
solar wafers. As part of the European Thin-Si consortium, IMPT is
contributing its low cost coating technology and now has a detailed plan
for producing a prototype coating machine.
It is hoped that IMPT's large area 2D Thin-Si coating machine will be
transferred into production for coating solar cells sometime in 2012.
